Alabama House passes bill criminalizing assistance with absentee ballots

The Alabama House of Representatives Thursday passed a bill that would make it a felony for most individuals and organizations to assist people with absentee ballots.

HB 209, sponsored by Rep. Jamie Kiel, R-Russellville, passed on a mostly party-line 76-28 vote after a filibuster from Democrats. Republicans voted to cloture the debate Thursday morning.

Kiel said during the floor debate Thursday that the bill aimed to ensure voter integrity.
