House District 18 State Rep. Jamie Kiel, R-Russellville, said the state is in a good spot with its budgets, both general fund and education.
“We are looking forward past this year, of course, and have done stress tests on the budget. In my view we have been very conservative in the last couple years,” he said. “We have brought in a lot of money, we have put money back for a rainy day.”
Still, he said, legislators believe there is some type of recession or economic downturn coming.
“Our forecast shows that even with a moderate recession that through 2028 we’re still in good shape. It would have to be a long-term downturn for our budget to be extremely affected,” Kiel said.
He said the Legislature has been able to provide money for local schools, including the University of North Alabama and Northwest Shoals Community College.
